Do you know the difference between a draftsperson and an architect?  I am sure you will know there is a difference but do you know when you would use one and not the other?

A draftsman is a more technical person who will capably draw up the construction plans as described to him.  He will also be more involved in the processes of construction and the requirements of councils and various other technical issues.

An architect can also draw up construction plans.   An architect has more skill in design and advising a client about different concepts, various materials and designing of a complex that may be more suitable to their needs.  The role of the architect is to manage a design team.  The design team are responsible to him.

Architects can be employed for a complete job from the beginning to end or they may just be contracted for a certain part of the job.  Following are a list of jobs they may be contracted for:

·        Brief

·        Sketch Design

·        Designing and Planning

·        Undertaking feasibility studies

·        Managing the building budget

·        Selecting and managing the project team

·        Designing the interior landscaping and surrounds

·        Tendering

·        Project Management

Making the choice whether to use a draftsman or an architect is a personal decision and can be based on needs and requirements or on cost as an architect is substantially more expensive than a draftsman.

In most cases an architect is contracted and he then organises a team, including a draftsman.

If considering which to use, then an interview should help with the decision.

It is a good idea to have them onsite when purchasing the property so that design and structure can be discussed before purchasing.

After completing this activity a suitable design team should be able to be contracted.
