Do you understand the purpose of a quantity surveyor?

There are several reasons why you would use a quantity surveyor if you are doing alterations.

· Firstly, a quantity surveyor will estimate the cost and amount of materials to be used during an alteration.

· If you get your plans drawn up you can get a quantity surveyor to estimate the amount of materials you will be using as per the plans, and also the cost of these materials. That leaves you in the position of being able to keep a very careful eye on costs during the alterations. If you have a builder who goes outside those guidelines you can argue the point with your qualified estimation.

· If you are going for a loan it will be a favourable point in your favour to have a set value for the bank to view.

· To claim your tax on a property investment you need to have a quantity surveyor’s report anyway, so you may as well have it done at the beginning and know that you are in control of the alterations.
